Offset printing employs oil based ink, which does not mix with water. Its name comes from the fact that in this method, images are not transported directly from the plates to the paper but this is done through rubber blankets as a medium.
First step is to develop the graphics. When offset printing started, the images had to be developed by the use of film negatives and they were later put on aluminum plates. This is no longer required as the technology is available for making the plates in one step through an image setting system. This plate is then put on a cylinder with the correct side up. Next, the water is put on the image plates, which is followed by the ink. While the ink gets stuck to the image, the water gets attached to that part of the plate where there is no image so that the ink does not spread beyond the image.
After being painted with the ink, the image is put on a rubber blanket which is on a different cylinder, leading the image to be inversed. The image is inverted to its right side by transmitting the image to sheets which have been cut according to the requirement and are placed on a different cylinder.
